IE8 has DNS cache issues?

Noticed problems with IE8 after changing a domain's www A record to point to a different server. IE8 doesn't see the change and comes up with errors. Site works fine in Firefox.

Problem

The www A record for an unused domain was pointing to one web server but we needed to re-point to different server to make it live. DNS changes made OK and seemed to have propagated within the hour.

However, next morning couldn't access the website, returning 404 on pages that were definitely in place. Tried with Firefox and website found OK.

ping returns the correct (new) IP address.

ipconfig /flushdns returns: Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during execution
