A client with an existing website hosted via Microsoft Office Live needed to transfer this out to a different registrar. Here's how it all worked out...

Background

We have a new client with an existing website hosted via Microsoft Office Live. Without any DNS changes possible we need to extract the domain to a preferred ISP.

The client registered the domain with Office Live when setting it up so the domain is registered with Melbourne IT. They use a system called delegation to give control of the domain to Office Live, i.e. using the Office Live name servers.

Here we go

Removed domain from Office Live at 10:30. By 11:40 the website was down. There doesn't appear to be any way to keep a website live while transferring out.

My Account

14:55 Client receives confirmation of cancellation of domain and a link with domain key. Following this link and entering domain (and domain key) forwards to a Melbourne IT login screen. No clues as to what to enter. Hope client has received an email...

16:35 Still no response. Check Melbourne IT website again and try creating a 'My Account'

17:44 Client receives account confirmation. Log in OK and find a link to Manage Domains. No domains listed so try to add the domain, which asks for the original domain key. Fails with an error suggesting organisation contact address not complete. I had completed the account as an individual so returned to account details to see if anything was missing. Saved contact details anyway but still no joy.

Linking domain to Melbourne IT

Go back to original email, follow link and re-entered domain and domain key and get to a contact confirmation page. Confirm details but get an error - again suggesting organisation contact is incomplete (see below).

However, followed the link and when updating get a message suggesting the telephone number was in the wrong format: -

Fixed this and returned to Manage Domains - the domain is finally listed 8-)

DNS?

Sadly there's no mention on DNS in the Melbourne IT control panel. Plenty of information on how to transfer in but nothing on transferring out. Contact Us link just leads back to Help.

Finally find a feedback form and use this to request a change of TAG. Wonder what time it is in Melbourne?

No response from Melbourne IT so progressing TAG transfer to HEARTINTERNET via Nominet...
